Description
Step aboard Lamprey, a 48ft 6in traditional stern narrowboat, built by the renowned R.W. Davis in 1991. Full of character, this vessel boasts the distinctive features of a classic working boat — including a dedicated engine room and a traditional boatman’s cabin, offering a nostalgic nod to canal heritage with the convenience of modern updates.
Powering Lamprey is the Beta JD3, a three-cylinder keel-cooled diesel engine paired with a PRM gearbox — a setup known for its distinctive sound and mechanical simplicity. The hull is constructed from steel with plating thicknesses of 10/6/5/4, and its flat-bottomed design provides stability and ease of maintenance. In 2022, the hull was blacked with 2-pack epoxy.
Inside, the solid oak flooring and ply cabin sides are complemented by sprayfoam insulation and top-opening windows, creating a warm and practical living space. Accommodation includes five berths: a convertible dinette, a single bunk at the bow, and a pull-down double bed cleverly integrated into the boatman’s cabin.
The galley is fitted with Thetford oven, a two-burner gas hob and a 12v Dometic fridge, while hot water is supplied via a Morco gas boiler. Warmth and atmosphere are provided by a traditional solid fuel stove within the saloon and a boatman’s stove within the boatman’s cabin. The bathroom is equipped with a Thetford Porta Potti, shower, and vanity basin.
Lamprey benefits from both 12v and 240v (shoreline connection) electrical systems, supported by one starter and three leisure batteries. Additional features include three side hatches, enhancing both ventilation and light, and a valid Boat Safety Certificate until 2028.
Lamprey could be ideal for those seeking a traditional boat with a rugged aesthetic and well-considered layout.
