Description
Northern Sun is a characterful 50ft by 10ft Dutch Barge built in the style of a traditional Groninger Tjalk, dating circa 1920. With its classic wheelhouse design and spacious beam, this unique vessel offers a distinctive living and cruising experience on the waterways. Currently moored in Gloucester, there is also the opportunity to acquire a private mooring in Tewkesbury via separate negotiation.
Powered by a Lister JP3 three-cylinder diesel engine with a Lister gearbox, Northern Sun delivers reliable performance alongside the unmistakable charm of a classic engine. The steel riveted hull with a flat bottom design reflects the vessel’s traditional heritage, while urethane foam insulation and a combination of top opening windows and portholes help maintain comfort onboard. The boat carries approximately 48 gallons of fuel within a steel tank.
Hot water is supplied via a Morco gas boiler, while heating is provided by a Morso Squirrel solid fuel stove installed new in 2025. The electrical system includes both 12v and 240v power, supported by a Studer Joker 800 inverter, one starter battery and three leisure batteries, along with a Victron smart charger and Durite voltage converter. A water tank of approximately 100 gallons supports extended stays aboard.
The interior offers comfortable accommodation for two with a fixed double bed and a well-appointed living space. The galley includes a Beko cooker, Cookology fridge/freezer, microwave and attractive oak worktops. The bathroom features a hip bath with shower over, toilet and a vanity basin, providing practical facilities for life afloat.
Northern Sun has benefitted from recent maintenance including bitumen blacking in 2025, the installation of eight 1.5kg magnesium anodes and a survey completed the same year. The Boat Safety Certificate is valid until 2030, offering peace of mind for the next owner. Additional features include a skylight and wheelhouse, enhancing both light and character throughout the vessel.
